Winter Holidays in Belgrade

December is here and except from the cold weather, it also means the beginning of the holiday season which fills these cold and dark winter days with lights and joy.
It’s the end of the year and despite the fact that we are occupied with various thoughts and wishes, we also have to make a plan for celebration of the upcoming holidays.

Holidays officially start in mid December with the ceremony of lightning of the 12 meters high Christmas Tree in the center of the city. As a great warm up, the Christmas Market called „Square of Open Heart“ will be set in the Republic Square. It is a special setting of wooden houses with traditional New Year products – coffee, cookies, hot chocolate, boiled wine and rakija, tea, sweets and rich everyday program for children. The most popular event in December offers you possibility to have an amusement park indoors. New Year Fair at Belgrade Fair is an exciting and relaxing opportunity to celebrate, shop and have fun, offering thousands of visitors a unique experience. Roller coaster, rides for young children, all sorts of candies, shopping for New Year’s presents, museums exhibitions, amateur sport competitions, ice skating ring-what else do you need when you imagine perfect Holiday day in Serbia.

Every winter outdoor ice skating rinks appear all over Belgrade. Most are open late in the evening and many have special events happening throughout the season.

During holidays don’t miss shopping in Belgrade shopping centers where New Year sales offer good discounts. You should also visit some of Belgrade galleries, enjoy in theaters and exhibitions, or attend some of the numerous traditional events in Belgrade.

Depending on your preferences you can spend New Year's Eve in a club, restaurant, splav, bar etc. Expect to have a great time no matter where you go. A large number of clubs organize parties with more then one stage so during one evening you can enjoy different kinds of music. Bars are usually thematically oriented.

The City of Belgrade has prepared an exciting program for visitors who will have the opportunity to choose the perfect ambience with several music stages on different locations, and a lot of concerts of great music performers. The main concert stage will be located in front of the National Parliament Building, where visitors can enjoy great music concerts on 30th and 31st of December! The other stage will be placed at the Republic Square, and will be dedicated to rock & roll music. The third stage will be set for all those who want to spend a crazy night with a DJ and enjoy dancing beats.

The New Year celebration usually starts in one of the Belgrade cafes, restaurants, bars, clubs with a rich selection that can satisfy every taste, from folk music, through the old music, to house rhythms and lasts till the early morning hours.

The party continues on the 1st of January at noon in Svetogorska Street which turns into the Open Heart Street.

This traditional event became a recognizable brand of Belgrade, which promotes Belgrade generosity and hospitality. In a carnival atmosphere adults drink boiled wine and rakija, while children enjoy the numerous entertainment programs. Actors, singers, jugglers, circus performers, orchestras, Serbian folklore ensembles and other artists take part in the program. Besides the street performances, puppet shows and New Year carriage and sleigh rides are laid on for the children. Off course New Year can’t go by without Santa Clause.

And, of course, that’s not all. Do not forget that you are in Serbia and that Serbs are very well known as party people, so we have to celebrate the New Year twice! Serbian New Year is celebrated on 13th January, and on this day You should make a reservation at one of many inns with traditional cuisine, live music and an atmosphere to remember.
