NIKOLA TESLA MUSEUM

Vračar is known as a very nice neighborhood. It is one of the three municipalities that constitute the central area of the city, the other two being Savski Venac and Stari Grad. This is one of the prettiest areas in Belgrade. One of the most important city sights is The church of St. Sava, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world. Other important objects in this area are National library of Serbia, National history museum, Belgrade Drama Theatre etc. It is close to Tašmajdan (public park) and Trg Republike (main square).

In Vračar there is something for everybody - bars, restaurants, parks, libraries, theathers, sport centers, parks, museums and galleries. In this blog post we focused on one important Belgrade museum - Nikola Tesla musem.

Most of you probably know who Nikola Tesla is. But in case you have not heard about this exceptional Serbian American scientist, take a look at his biography here and here.

"He gave his greatest contribution to science and technological progress of the world as the inventor of the rotating magnetic field and of the complete system of production and distribution of electrical energy (motors, generators) based on the use of alternate currents."
                                                                                                 -  Nikola Tesla Museum

Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade was founded in 1952. Thanks to Mr. Sava Kovačević, Tesla's nephew who was his only rightful heir, we are now able to enjoy a large collection of documents on life and work of Nikola Tesla.
"It is the only museum in the world which preserves the original and personal inheritance of Nikola Tesla. It possesses several exceptionally valuable collections:

over  160 000 original documents,
over  2000 books and journals,
over  1200 historical technical exhibits,
over 1500 photographs and photo plates of original, technical objects, instruments and apparatus,
over 1000 plans and drawings." -  Nikola Tesla Museum
The museum also presents Tesla's inventions, for example the Tesla transformer.  Click on the video below to see how it works.

Or if you wish to participate in demonstration of Tesla's coil it will look like this

What is more interesting about how great Tesla was is a story about Wardenclyffe Tower or Tesla Tower. It was a  tower in New York, designed by Nikola Tesla and it was intended for wireless transmission across Atlantic. He invested a lot of effort into this project but faced severe financial difficulties due to lack of understanding from the investors. Sadly, the tower was destroyed in 1917.

But in 2012 this amazing fellow Matthew Inman, the founder of very popular internet comic The Oatmeal . launched a fundraising campaign for the nonprofit organization Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe  so they could purchase the Wardenclyffe Tower property and develop a science and technology center. For more details please visit their website. You can find out more about the fundraising here

Matthew also wrote a great comic called "Why Nikola Tesla was the greatest geek who ever lived" to show his appreciation for the scientist. We strongly recommend reading this interesting peace of work. And his other comics as well!

The Nikola Tesla museum in Belgade is located downtown in a beautiful, residential area of Vračar, at 51 Krunska street. Visit the official website for info about exhibitions, working hours, pricing and the museum map.

If you are interested to rent an apartment in this area, known for many important facilities of cultural significance, we recommend you take a look at these five that are closest to the museum: Madera, Tash, Cream, Slavija, Panorama
